Summer is here, and that means it’s time to get outside! As kids, we all loved summer because of all the freedom it brought, but there are also plenty of awesome activities you can do by yourself or as a family outside this season that will encourage everyone to be healthy and active. If you don’t know where to start, check out this bucket list of outdoor adventures you can do this summer.
1) Camping
From pitching a tent to roasting marshmallows over an open fire, camping is the perfect way to get back to nature and bond with your family. Don’t forget to pack plenty of bug spray, sunscreen, and snacks! Whether you start off with a backyard campsite, or go straight for the dispersed camping/ boondocking experience in a national park, you are sure to come back with new memories.
2) Fishing
Fishing is a great summer activity for the whole family. You can enjoy the outdoors, learn about different types of fish, and bond with your loved ones. Plus, it’s a great way to relax and unwind.
3) Go on a hike
Hiking is a great way to get some exercise while enjoying the beauty of nature. It’s also a great bonding experience. As an added bonus you could use the hike to learn or practice navigational skills with a compass.
4) Jump in a lake
Swimming is a great way to cool off on a hot summer day, and what better place to do it than in a lake? Lakes are typically surrounded by nature, so you can also take advantage of the opportunity to explore. Be sure to pack some snacks and drinks, and don’t forget the sunscreen!
5) Unplug for a full day
One of the best things about summer is that there are so many opportunities to unplug from technology and connect with nature. Take advantage of the warmer weather and longer days by planning a full day without screens. Head to a nearby state park and hike some trails, go fishing, or pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in the great outdoors. You may be surprised at how refreshing it is to disconnect from the digital world and connect with your family and the natural world around you.
6) Star Gaze
There’s something about looking up at the stars that makes you feel small and insignificant in the best way possible. It’s a great reminder that there is so much out there beyond our everyday lives.
7) Watch a Sunrise or Sunset
One of the best things about summer is that the days are longer, which means there’s more time to enjoy the outdoors! Watching a sunrise or sunset is a great way to appreciate the beauty of nature, and get some much-needed vitamin D.
8) Go bird watching
Summer is the perfect time to go bird watching with your family! Not only will you get to enjoy the beautiful weather, but you’ll also get to bond with your kids while teaching them about nature. See how many different species you can spot and identify.
